In a decisive ruling on Friday, David DePape, the man who attacked Paul Pelosi, the husband of Democratic California Representative Nancy Pelosi, was handed a 30-year prison sentence.

DePape, 44, faced federal charges for attempting to kidnap a federal official and assaulting a family member of a federal official, both stemming from a November conviction.

The violent incident took place on October 28, 2022, when DePape broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco. Armed with a hammer, he brutally attacked 82-year-old Paul Pelosi, an act caught on police body cam footage.

DePape was searching for Nancy Pelosi, then Speaker of the House, who was not home at the time. He later confessed during trial that he intended to hold her hostage and “break her kneecaps” if she lied to him. His defense team argued that DePape’s actions were driven by political beliefs and conspiracy theories.

In a chilling phone call to a California newsroom, DePape expressed regret that he “didn’t get more of them,” implying he had plans to target other officials.

Paul Pelosi suffered significant injuries, including a skull fracture and damage to his right arm and hands, necessitating surgery. He spent nearly a week in the hospital and faced a long road to recovery, as noted by Nancy Pelosi.

Three weeks after the attack, Nancy Pelosi stepped down from her role as Speaker.

During DePape’s trial, Paul Pelosi recounted the harrowing assault, describing how DePape, wielding a hammer, overpowered him after police arrived, leaving him unconscious and severely injured.

Prosecutors pushed for a 40-year sentence, while the maximum penalty could have reached 50 years. The U.S. Probation Office suggested a 25-year term with an additional five years of supervised release.

Originally set for May 22, the sentencing date was moved up due to court scheduling conflicts.

DePape also faces multiple state charges, including attempted murder, residential burglary, elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, and threatening a public official’s family member. Jury selection for the state case starts on May 22.
