Former Representative George Santos announced that he is leaving the Republican Party and re-filing to run as an independent following the passage of $1.2 Trillion omnibus package passed by the GOP house on Friday.

In a post on X (formally Twitter), Santos announced, “I am officially suspending my petitioning in #NY01 to access the ballot as a Republican and will be filling to run as an independent”I will take my Ultra MAGA/Trump supporting values to the ballot in November as an Independent.”

The former congressman previously filed to run in New York’s 1st Congressional District against Republican incumbent Nick LaLota.
Santos previous served in New York’s 3rd congressional district but was expelled by the Republican led house over alleged ethics violations, making him only the sixth lawmaker ever to be ousted from the chamber, despite not having been convicted of any crime as of the time of the vote.
