In a surprising turn of events, X, the platform owned by Elon Musk, has rescinded its policy regarding users’ ability to “misgender” individuals, a move seemingly contradicting Musk’s staunch stance on prioritizing free speech on the platform.

Reportedly implemented in late January, X introduced a new section titled “Use of Prior Names and Pronouns” to its policies on abusive behavior, as documented by the Wayback Machine. The revised policy, as highlighted by Ars Technica, aims to “reduce the visibility of posts” intentionally using incorrect pronouns or previous names to refer to individuals who have transitioned.

This policy adjustment marks a partial reversal of Musk’s earlier decision to abolish the policy back in April 2023, raising questions about the rationale behind X’s backtrack. Despite inquiries, X remained silent on the matter when approached by the Washington Examiner for comment.

Musk’s vocal criticism of gender ideology over the years adds complexity to this development. Notably, he endorsed “What is a Woman,” a documentary by the Daily Wire, which explored various perspectives on womanhood, including detransitioners individuals who reverted to their biological sex after undergoing gender transitions. Musk’s disdain for certain terminology, such as labeling “cis” individuals, whom he considers slurs, and his call for the prosecution of therapists aiding children in gender transition, further underscore his stance against what he views as excessive political correctness.

According to Walter Isaacson’s biography of Musk, his shift towards an “anti-woke” stance coincided with personal experiences, including his child’s transgender identification, which led to severed communication.

Moreover, Musk’s acquisition of the social media platform was reportedly influenced by the suspension of the Babylon Bee, a satire outlet, for a tweet referring to Rachel Levine, a transgender individual, by her biological sex.

X’s adoption of a misgendering policy follows similar moves by other major social media platforms. Discord, for instance, announced in December its prohibition against repeated use of slurs, including misgendering or deadnaming transgender individuals, citing efforts to prevent harassment and discrimination.
