Democratic Rep. Barbara Lee has ignited a firestorm of debate in the race to succeed the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein by proposing a staggering increase in the federal minimum wage to $50 per hour a move that would dwarf the current federal rate by more than sixfold.

Lee, who is competing in a heated primary against fellow Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff and Katie Porter, as well as Republican Steve Garvey, argues that California’s skyrocketing cost of living necessitates such a drastic measure, asserting that residents struggle to make ends meet on salaries below $100,000 annually.

“Just crunch the numbers,” Lee urged. “Recent reports have shown that in the Bay Area alone, a family of four needs at least $127,000 just to scrape by. Another study revealed that $104,000 per year is barely enough for a single individual to survive.”

With the federal minimum wage currently set at $7.25 per hour and California’s minimum wage at $16 per hour, Lee’s proposal would translate to an annual income of $104,000 for a standard 40-hour workweek.

Stock up for Long Term Survival

During a spirited Senate debate, Lee faced scrutiny over the viability of her plan for small businesses. Undeterred, she underscored the necessity of ensuring employees receive a “livable wage” to safeguard their financial security.

Representing California’s 12th District, which includes areas like Oakland and Berkeley, Lee’s call for a substantial minimum wage hike comes amid escalating living costs nationwide, with California grappling with particularly acute economic challenges, given the wide disparities in income levels across its cities.

While Lee’s Democratic rivals have signaled support for a minimum wage increase to the range of $20 to $25 per hour, Garvey remains steadfast in his belief that the current federal minimum wage suffices.
