A recent Rasmussen Reports survey highlights the deep divide between Democrats and Republicans regarding the removal of former President Donald Trump’s name from the 2024 election ballots. While 47% of likely U.S. voters support states removing Trump’s name, including 34% who strongly approve, 50% oppose such actions, with 42% strongly disapproving.

The push to exclude Trump stems partly from claims made by Colorado officials during a recent Supreme Court case, arguing that Trump’s alleged involvement in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot constitutes “insurrection” under the Fourteenth Amendment, disqualifying him from future presidential runs.

Unsurprisingly, 78% of Democrats back the move to remove Trump, while 75% of Republicans oppose it, along with 57% of unaffiliated voters. This underscores the substantial partisan split shaping the debate.

The survey, conducted on February 8 and 11-12, 2024, interviewed 880 likely voters with a margin of sampling error of +/- 3 percentage points and a 95% level of confidence.

Opinions on the Capitol riot also reflect this divide, with 48% considering it an insurrection aimed at overthrowing the government, while 43% disagree. Democrats overwhelmingly view it as an insurrection (77%), while Republicans largely disagree (68%).

Further divisions emerge along gender, racial, age, ideological, and income lines. Women are more likely to label the riot as an insurrection and approve of Trump’s removal from ballots, while Black voters are more supportive of such actions and consider the riot an insurrection at higher rates than other racial groups.

Younger voters show greater support for both considering the riot an insurrection and removing Trump’s name from ballots, while older voters, particularly those 65 and older, strongly disapprove of the latter.

Liberal voters overwhelmingly view the riot as an insurrection, contrasting with conservative viewpoints. Income-wise, those earning over $200,000 annually tend to support Trump’s removal from ballots, while those with incomes between $30,000 and $50,000 disapprove most.

Interestingly, President Joe Biden’s strongest supporters are in favor of excluding Trump from ballots, while his strongest detractors oppose such measures.

As the election looms, Republicans hold a significant lead over Democrats in terms of who voters trust more on crime issues. Meanwhile, Trump maintains a notable level of respect among voters compared to other recent presidents and their rivals.
