The U.S. State Department has issued a travel advisory regarding Jamaica, signaling a “Level 3” advisory, urging American travelers to carefully consider their plans due to prevalent violent crimes in the area, such as home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides.
This advisory also brings attention to all-inclusive resorts in the region. The U.S. Embassy in Jamaica has echoed this advisory.
Furthermore, alongside the recommendation to reconsider travel, the agency advises travelers against nighttime walking or driving and discourages the use of public buses.

For a more granular perspective, the agency has provided specific guidance for various neighborhoods in Jamaica, some of which carry a “Level 4: Do Not Travel” advisory, emphasizing the need for extra precautions, including insurance and healthcare planning, before embarking on a trip to the island.
The advisory underscores the importance of obtaining traveler’s insurance, including medical evacuation coverage, as the Department of State does not cover medical expenses abroad. It is vital to note that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not extend its coverage overseas, and most foreign hospitals and doctors do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Jamaica’s tourism board, in response, has pointed out that the advisory focuses on specific high-risk areas within the country, reassuring travelers that the majority of the island’s tourism offerings remain unaffected, emphasizing that visitors can continue to explore Jamaica with confidence.
In addition to Jamaica, the U.S. State Department has also recently issued a Level 2 advisory for the Bahamas, urging travelers to exercise increased caution due to ongoing crime concerns.
