Russia’s Defense Ministry reported over the weekend that their air defenses intercepted and destroyed 158 Ukrainian drones, including two over Moscow and nine in the surrounding area.

A substantial number of these drones were downed in the Kursk region, a key battleground where Ukrainian forces have recently intensified their push. The Kremlin has been trying to minimize the significance of this escalation while continuing its own offensive operations.

General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine’s top military officer, stated that Ukrainian troops have gained control over nearly 1,300 square kilometers and approximately 100 settlements within Russia’s Kursk region.

Nigel Gould-Davies of the International Institute for Strategic Studies commented, “In mobilizing forces to address Ukraine’s incursions, Russia is striving to avoid redeploying units from its offensive in the Donbas. The current Russian strategy is to manage the threat on its own territory without detracting from its primary objectives in Ukraine.”

Ukrainian drones have been targeting refineries and oil terminals within Russia, aiming to disrupt Russia’s war efforts.

In addition, Vyacheslav Gladkov, the Governor of Belgorod, reported that 11 people were injured in Ukrainian missile attacks on the Russian border region on Sunday.

Russia is also reportedly advancing on Pokrovsk, a key Ukrainian logistics hub, and has intensified its assault on Kharkiv, resulting in over 40 injuries, including five children. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged allies to permit Ukraine to deploy Western-supplied missiles in retaliation.

The conflict in Ukraine has reached a critical juncture as Russia presses forward with strikes on essential Ukrainian infrastructure and advances towards strategic regions. Zelensky emphasized, “The global community must act to halt this terror. It doesn’t require extraordinary efforts, just the courage from leaders to provide Ukraine with the support it needs to defend itself.”
