She attacks the Electoral College and criticizes the Constitution’s protections for minority rights, dismissing them as a “tyranny of the minority” and accusing the document of “disempowering majorities.” In a stunning twist, she even goes so far as to blame the Constitution for President Trump’s election in 2016, painting it as the very force that made his presidency possible.

According to Szalai, “Americans have long assumed that the Constitution could save us; a growing chorus now wonders whether we need to be saved from it.” She argues that the Constitution, which was designed to safeguard against authoritarianism, might now be enabling it instead. She goes on to say, “Trump owes his political ascent to the Constitution, making him a beneficiary of a document that is essentially antidemocratic and, in this day and age, increasingly dysfunctional.”

Szalai highlights Trump’s rise to power, noting that he won the presidency in 2016 through the Electoral College despite losing the popular vote. She further criticizes his appointment of three Supreme Court justices, two of whom were confirmed by senators representing a minority of the population. She blames these appointments for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, a decision she claims went against the wishes of most Americans.

And if that wasn’t enough, Szalai dismisses any originalist interpretation of the Constitution as “Constitution worship,” a slap in the face to anyone who believes in adhering to the principles laid down by our Founding Fathers.
