Get ready, stargazers! In just a few weeks, asteroid “2024 ON” will make a daring flyby past Earth at a surprisingly close ”“ but completely safe ”“ distance, according to the Virtual Telescope Project.
This massive space rock, stretching at least 720 feet across (the length of two football fields), will be visible to those in the Northern Hemisphere.

The asteroid is set to whiz past our planet from about 620,000 miles away, roughly 2.6 times the distance between Earth and the Moon. While that may sound hair-raisingly close, experts assure it poses no threat.
Encounters like this are rare, typically happening only once every decade, as noted by the Virtual Telescope Project.

You can catch a front-row seat to the action starting September 15 at 2:30 p.m. ET through the Virtual Telescope’s live online feed.
Remember, asteroids like “2024 ON” are remnants from the chaotic birth of our solar system 4.6 billion years ago, according to NASA.
