In a lawsuit that’s sure to make waves, it’s alleged that cyberbullies, driven by “misogynistic, racist, and sexist” motives, went after the 25-year-old athlete.

Boudi, the lawyer, made it clear: “This allows the prosecution the freedom to go after anyone, including those hiding behind fake names to spew their hate.”

But it’s not just random internet trolls being called out. The complaint also names some big names.

“JK Rowling and Elon Musk are specifically mentioned,” Boudi said, hinting that Donald Trump might also come under the microscope.

“Trump tweeted about this, so whether or not he’s named directly, he’s going to be scrutinized by the prosecution,” he added.

Khelif’s no ordinary athlete; she made history as Algeria’s first female boxing gold medalist and the nation’s first Olympic gold medalist in boxing since 1996.

But controversy hit when it was discovered that Khelif had failed the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) gender eligibility test, leading to her disqualification from the 2023 Boxing World Championships. This raised eyebrows about her gender.

However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) pushed back on this test and stripped the IBA of its Olympic recognition, citing corruption, lack of financial transparency, and poor governance among the reasons.

Khelif was born female and has never identified as intersex or transgender. “This is not a man fighting a woman,” the IOC stated firmly, backing her gender identity.

The issue exploded into the public eye when Italian boxer Angela Carini quit her match against Khelif just 46 seconds in, claiming, “I have never felt a punch like this.”

Rowling chimed in on X, slamming Khelif as a “male who knows he’s protected.”

“The smug grin of a male protected by a misogynistic sports establishment as he enjoys destroying a woman’s dreams,” Rowling wrote.

She later clarified, “I’m not saying Khelif is trans. The real issue is men’s violence against women being passed off as Olympic sport.”

Musk didn’t stay silent either, sharing a post from U.S. swimmer Riley Gaines that declared, “men don’t belong in women’s sports,” to which Musk added his own “Absolutely.”

Trump also took to social media, sharing an image from the fight with the caption: “I will keep men out of women’s sports!”

Boudi told Variety that while certain names were highlighted in the complaint, “we’re asking the prosecution to investigate anyone they see fit.”

“If this goes to court, those involved will face trial,” he stated.

Though the lawsuit was filed in France, Boudi hinted it could go after international figures.

Khelif’s coach, Pedro Diaz, spoke out against the treatment she faced during the Olympics, saying it had a profound impact on her and her team.

“There was a storm of hatred outside the ring the first time she fought in the Olympics,” said Diaz, who has trained 21 Olympic champions before Khelif. “I’ve never seen anything so vile.”

Khelif herself responded to the controversy, saying, “I’m fully qualified to compete. I’m a woman, always have been. These detractors are just enemies of success. Their attacks only make my victories sweeter.”

If Khelif wins this legal battle, Rowling, Musk, and others named in the lawsuit could face up to five years behind bars and fines reaching £214,000 (around $236,074).
