Robert F. Kennedy Jr., running as an independent presidential candidate for the 2024 election, has not met the qualifying criteria to participate in the first debate of the election cycle, according to CNN. The criteria required candidates to achieve at least 15% support in four separate national polls and to be on the ballot in enough states theoretically capable of securing 270 electoral college votes.
Kennedy, despite being the highest-performing candidate outside the Republican and Democratic parties for 2024, did not meet these requirements by the deadline set by CNN. This information was independently confirmed by a CNN spokesperson to Fox News, indicating that Kennedy will not be included in the upcoming debate.
According to a news release by CNN, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the independent presidential candidate for the 2024 election, fell short of qualifying for the first debate due to two main reasons:
- Kennedy was able to reach the necessary 15% support threshold in only three separate national polls, failing to meet the requirement of four polls set by CNN for debate qualification.
- Additionally, Kennedy did not qualify for the ballot in enough states to hypothetically secure the 270 electoral college votes needed to win the election.
These criteria were outlined by CNN for participation in their hosted debate, and Kennedy did not satisfy either condition by the deadline, as reported by the network.
In response to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. not qualifying for the presidential debate, a spokesperson for former President Trump’s campaign, Karoline Leavitt, stated that Trump expressed willingness to debate Kennedy and believes that any candidate who meets the ballot qualification should have the opportunity to present their case to American voters.
Leavitt also criticized Joe Biden and the Democratic Party, accusing them of using financial and legal means to hinder Kennedy’s access to the ballot. She argued that this action reflects their concern that Kennedy, whom she described as a radical leftist, would attract more votes away from Biden than from Trump. This statement suggests a strategic perspective on the impact Kennedy could have on the electoral dynamics between Biden and Trump.
The upcoming 90-minute debate, set for June 27 in Atlanta, will feature Joe Biden and Donald Trump in their first face-to-face encounter since the 2020 election cycle. CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash will serve as hosts for the event.
CNN has announced that there will be two commercial breaks during the debate. Importantly, candidates will not be permitted to consult with any members of their campaign teams during these breaks. This rule aims to ensure that the candidates’ responses and interactions during the debate remain solely their own, without external influence or assistance.
In addition to the format details previously mentioned, CNN has specified additional rules and arrangements for the upcoming debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump:
- Podiums and Positions: The placement of candidates’ podiums and their positions on stage will be determined by a coin flip, ensuring fairness in their physical positioning during the debate.
- Microphone Muting: Candidates’ microphones will be muted when it is not their designated speaking time. This measure aims to minimize interruptions and ensure clarity during the debate.
- Materials Provided: Each candidate will be provided with a pen, a notepad, and a bottle of water. These are the only items allowed at their podiums.
- Restrictions on Props and Notes: Candidates will not be permitted to bring any props or prepared notes onto the stage. This rule ensures that responses and arguments presented during the debate are spontaneous and based solely on the candidates’ own knowledge and abilities.
These guidelines are designed to maintain fairness, decorum, and focus on substantive discussion during the debate, reflecting standard practices in high-profile political debates.
