CBS News host Margaret Brennan expressed bewilderment at the findings of a recent poll indicating majority support for deporting all illegal immigrants. “Homeland Security says that President Biden has already deported or repatriated more people in the past year than any year since 2010. And then, depending on the details of what’s talked about on the campaign trail, some of what Mr. Trump talks about could be illegal,” Brennan observed.

Continuing her analysis, she remarked, “It doesn’t seem practical, in some sense, to round up children. And then we know that the courts have questioned whether local authorities would have the ability to do it, and federal authorities don’t have the resources. So what exactly do people think they’re supporting?”

According to a CBS News/YouGov poll conducted between June 5-7, 62% of registered voters expressed support for a government program aimed at deporting all migrants residing in the U.S. illegally. Additionally, the same poll revealed that a majority of registered voters endorsed President Biden’s recent executive action concerning the southern border.

Anthony Salvanto, CBS’ director of elections and surveys, noted that while support for a deportation effort was primarily among former President Trump’s supporters, some Democrats also backed it. “When you measure public sentiment on this or really just about any policy, you’re getting a sense of direction. You’re getting broad brushstrokes,” Salvanto explained.

Regarding local authorities’ involvement in deportations, Salvanto stated, “A lot of folks do say yes. Again, the details of that, the specifics, you’re not going to pick that up in an aggregate public opinion.”

“We are in a different era in which a lot of folks say the system as a whole is not working. And all of these, if you connect the dots through them, are part of that reaction against it, which explains some of that general sentiment for some of these policies,” Salvanto concluded.

Brennan remarked that Americans generally desire governmental action on immigration issues, expressing a sentiment of “do something.”

Trump has outlined plans to utilize the National Guard for deporting migrants unlawfully present in the U.S. He has additionally declared intentions to execute “the largest domestic deportation operation in American history.”

Recently, Biden issued executive actions concerning the southern border, including measures to temporarily halt migrants crossing the border illegally from seeking asylum.

Officials announced that President Biden issued a presidential proclamation to temporarily halt the entry of non-citizens across the southern border. This suspension will take effect once the average daily border encounters exceed 2,500 over seven days and will remain in place until a seven-day average of encounters drops below 1,500. The proclamation aims to facilitate the swift removal of individuals lacking a legal basis to stay in the U.S., making it easier for immigration officers to enforce these measures.
