Shelby County Commissioner Henri Brooks has sparked controversy with her proposal to rename Presidents’ Day, citing it as a racist holiday that requires reevaluation.

The resolution she sponsored, titled “Racial Exclusion and Humiliation,” aims to rename the holiday to “Friends and Employee Holiday” to better reflect its inclusivity and to honor the contributions of black enslaved individuals in building the nation.

In her resolution, Brooks highlights the overlooked role of black enslaved persons who were bought, sold, and exploited for profit by United States Presidents.

These individuals, she argues, played a significant role in constructing iconic landmarks such as the White House, Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Monticello, and Montpelier, yet their contributions have been largely ignored by history.

However, not everyone is supportive of Brooks’ initiative. Ben Deeter, a prominent radio host on KWAM News Radio, criticized Brooks’ focus on renaming the holiday. Deeter pointed out that if Brooks truly wants to address racism, she should direct her attention to the current occupant of the White House, President Biden.

Deeter accused Biden of associating with notorious racists and making racially insensitive remarks throughout his political career, suggesting that the focus should be on addressing present-day issues rather than historical grievances.

Brooks’ proposal has ignited a debate about the significance of commemorating historical figures and events, with some arguing for a more inclusive approach to holidays and others questioning the motives behind rewriting history. As discussions continue, the renaming of Presidents’ Day remains a contentious topic in Shelby County and beyond.
