Patrick Douglas Scruggs, a former U.S. prosecutor from Tampa who played a role in indicting Florida residents involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, now finds himself at the center of his own legal storm.

Court records reveal that Scruggs is set to appear at the Pinellas County Justice Center on May 3 for a pre-trial hearing concerning accusations that he stabbed a 35-year-old man during a road rage incident last year.

The 38-year-old, released on bond, faces three felony counts, including armed burglary, aggravated battery, and aggravated assault, stemming from the altercation.

Scruggs’ legal troubles erupted after a dramatic road rage clash on the Howard Frankland Bridge outside Tampa last September. Video footage captured Scruggs allegedly stabbing the victim with a pocket knife during the confrontation, which authorities believe was triggered by road rage.

The victim, slumped over in his vehicle, halted traffic, prompting police intervention. Scruggs, known for his involvement in Capitol riot cases, now faces charges for inflicting “great bodily harm” on the victim during the violent encounter.

A pre-trial hearing is slated for May 3 at 8:30 AM at the Pinellas County Justice Center. While Scruggs awaits trial, he remains out on a $10,000 bond, with a checkered criminal history spanning from reckless driving to bank robbery.

Scruggs’ previous involvement in Capitol riot prosecutions stirred controversy, raising questions about potential bias in his legal proceedings. However, the DOJ has clarified that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia oversaw these prosecutions independently.

Walkaway founder Branon Straka who was sentenced and prosecuted for January 6 for being outside the Capitol added the following remarks on X.

This is Patrick Douglas Scruggs. Patrick is a federal prosecutor who helped put Capitol trespassers in prison, and perpetrated the narrative that these people were grave threats to society. In September, 2023, a driver on a bridge hit Mr. Scrugg’s car. Mr. Scruggs got out of his car, broke the driver’s window, and proceeded to stab him over and over again with a knife. A couple got out of their car and tried to help the stabbing victim, then Mr. Scruggs tried to stab the couple. Scrugg’s attorney stated that his client is innocent until proven guilty, and has asked the public to “keep an open mind” because his client “was part of a chaotic situation”. #ProsecutorsOfJ6
