Surprisingly, FDNY leadership appears blindsided by the backlash during last Thursday’s promotion ceremony, where James faced booing and chants of “Trump.” Given the firehouse culture, anticipation of such reactions should have been expected.

Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh’s displeasure prompted a call for participants to come forward, backed by an internal memo warning of repercussions after reviewing event footage. The focus is on educating individuals about the perceived inappropriateness of their behavior.

Despite James’ prior rapport with the firefighters’ union, her recent spotlight has been as a vocal opponent of the former president, culminating in a significant civil fraud judgment against him in February.

While event attendees, mainly families and off-duty firefighters, may harbor diverse political views, the department asserts its actions are apolitical, aimed solely at preserving decorum.

Had the situation involved heckling of a conservative politician or chanting in support of Palestine, no similar investigation would have ensued. The crackdown stems from displeasure with dissent towards a member of New York’s Democratic elite.

The underlying message is clear: while political expression is acceptable off-duty, it has no place during official duties or events involving colleagues and their families.
