Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Cori Bush (D-MO), and Summer Lee (D-PA) made a bold statement at President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address by wearing Palestinian keffiyehs.
Images circulated showing these progressive House “Squad” members sporting the scarves as a symbolic gesture. The keffiyeh holds significance as a symbol of Palestinian nationalism and resistance against Israel, sparking controversy.

The white scarf adorned with a fishing net design carries historical weight, symbolizing one of the primary livelihoods of Palestinians before 1948.
However, the garment’s association with Palestinian militant groups like Hamas and the Palestinian Liberation Organization has drawn criticism from many Israelis and Jews, who find it offensive.

The Squad, known for their outspoken views, has vehemently criticized President Biden’s handling of the conflict in Gaza. Accusations have been leveled, suggesting Biden’s actions amount to supporting a genocide against Palestinians. Threats to withdraw support in November loom if the president fails to alter his approach.
Cori Bush and other Squad members reiterated on Thursday that they believe Biden has not taken sufficient measures to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians.
