U.S. B-2 bombers conducted strikes on weapon depots linked to Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, marking the first deployment of this stealth bomber against the group.
In a statement, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin explained that the operation, ordered by President Joe Biden on Wednesday night, aimed to “further degrade” the Houthis’ capability to attack commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea. The strikes may also serve as a warning to Iran, especially as tensions between Tehran and U.S. ally Israel escalate.
While Austin did not explicitly name Iran, he emphasized that the B-2 bomber, capable of carrying 30,000-pound bunker-busting munitions, showcases the U.S. ability to target facilities that adversaries try to conceal. He highlighted that the deployment of B-2 Spirit long-range stealth bombers underscores the U.S.’s readiness to address such threats whenever necessary.
The U.S. defense chief reported that the “precision strikes” focused on five fortified underground weapons storage sites in areas controlled by the Houthis in Yemen. A statement from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), based in Tampa, Florida, indicated that U.S. Navy resources were also involved in the operation. CENTCOM is currently evaluating the “battle damage,” but preliminary assessments suggest there were no civilian casualties.
The U.S. Air Force characterizes the B-2 as a “multi-role bomber” capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons. It has a range of approximately 6,000 nautical miles without the need for refueling, and its sole operational base is located in Missouri.
Perhaps this cycle’s October surprise will be full on kinetic war with a middle eastern nation.
