President Biden has maintained efforts to distance himself from his family’s business affairs throughout his presidential campaign and tenure, yet a recent report sheds light on the extent to which individuals in the president’s inner circle have been engaged in Biden family enterprises.

According to a report from Politico, Biden has shared a personal bookkeeper with his son, Hunter Biden, a personal lawyer with his brother, Jim Biden, and the former head of then-Vice President Biden’s Secret Service detail aided Jim Biden in probing a potential Chinese business partner.

Despite assertions from the Bidens regarding the observance of strict “firewalls” concerning business discussions within the family, the Politico report delineates the significant involvement of individuals in the president’s circle in matters concerning Hunter and Jim Biden’s ventures.

In a particular instance, Jim Biden, the president’s brother, enlisted Dale Pupillo, the former head of the Secret Service detail for the former vice president, to conduct an investigation on a Chinese executive whom the president’s son, Hunter Biden, was intending to meet during a trip in 2017.

During the February impeachment inquiry, the president’s brother emphasized that he personally initiated the investigation into the executive to ensure he had adequate information before the meeting, but maintained that he was unaware of the specific details of his nephew’s potential venture.

“I wanted to know who I was meeting with and if there were any complications at all,” he stated during the impeachment interview, highlighting the Biden family’s practice of keeping business details separate from each other.

The executive in question, Patrick Ho, was subsequently arrested and convicted on federal corruption charges.

According to the Politico report, Jim Biden had a history of leveraging connections to his influential older brother. In 1975, during Joe Biden’s initial Senate term, Jim Biden obtained a loan from the senator’s former law firm, Walsh, Monzack & Owens, to support his nightclub business.

One of the partners at that firm, Mel Monzack, later became the president’s personal attorney and campaign treasurer. Monzack’s current firm has also served as the registered agent for the president’s personal S Corporation, CelticCapri, which manages income from endeavors such as writing and speaking engagements.

Monzack has also served as Jim Biden’s personal attorney, assisting in negotiating a proposed deal that would have granted the president’s brother’s company a 35% stake in the Americore hospital chain.

Although the deal ultimately fell through, Monzack’s involvement prompted scrutiny. Jim Biden, however, has maintained that he lacks knowledge of the attorney’s arrangement with President Biden.

“I don’t have the full depth of what he does or doesn’t do,” he remarked in February. “But I know that he’s intricately involved and has been, you know, for the last 40 or 50 years.”

Another close associate of President Biden, Fran Person, continued to maintain ties with Hunter Biden after leaving government in 2014. Emails revealed that Person, whom the Bidens have described as akin to a son to them during Joe Biden’s tenure in the Senate and as vice president, proposed a plan to develop SeaWorld parks in China in collaboration with the state-owned Chinese Development Bank in 2015.

WhatsApp messages uncovered during an IRS investigation into Hunter Biden’s tax affairs also indicated conversations between Person and Hunter Biden. These exchanges included discussions in which Person informed Hunter Biden that his Chinese business partner, Bo Zhang, was keen to assist the president’s son in overcoming his mounting financial difficulties.

The Politico report also illuminated the role of another of Hunter Biden’s business partners, personal bookkeeper Eric Schwerin, within the family circle, highlighting President Biden’s reliance on Schwerin to manage his own financial matters.

However, during the impeachment inquiry, Schwerin testified that there was no commingling between the president and his son’s finances.

Moreover, the ties between the president’s inner circle and his family extended to President Biden’s personal physician, Army doctor Kevin O’Connor. O’Connor initially served as then-Vice President Biden’s personal physician and developed a close relationship with Biden during his tenure in the administration. O’Connor now holds the position of Biden’s White House physician, as detailed in the report.

In the interim between those two roles, the president’s brother, Jim Biden, enlisted the assistance of O’Connor as part of his proposed Americore deal. As detailed in the report, Jim Biden aimed to collaborate with the Veterans Affairs Department “to utilize vacant space at rural hospitals for the treatment of veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.”
